Youth Sports

The Rochester Area Family Y believes that youth sports programs encourage and promote healthy and strong kids, families and communities by placing a priority on family involvement, healthy competition rather than rivalry, the value of participation over winning, team building as well as individual development, a positive self-image and a sense of fair play and mutual respect for others. Four core values are incorporated into every sport---respect, responsiblity, caring, honesty.

 

Fall Sports

Youth Flag Football

Children in Grades K-3

Boys and girls will learn fundamentals, and work on passing, running, catching, and both offense and defense. Each participant will play all positions. Players will receive a t-shirt; they will need to dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Parent volunteer coaches are needed. See Coach's Meeting information on this page. Games are played behind the Y at Soldier's Field.

Small Stuff Sports

...for children age 3-1/2 to 5 with a parent

A unique way to spend time with your child while learning the basic fundamentals of sports. Skill stations are held the 4 sessions, with the big game at the end! Players will receive a team t-shirt and an award.

Youth Volleyball

Boys and girls will learn the basic skills of passing, serving and setting. The 6-week program includes 3 weeks of practice and skill stations and 3 weeks of games.

Karate for Youth

Our Instructors teach self-defense and mental discipline through a classical style of Karate developed on the island of Okinawa. Boys and girls, ages 5-14, will learn the basic techniques of blocking, punching, kicking and efficient forms of self-defense. Karate training is a great way to build strength, balance, coordination, and develop character, in a non-competitive atmosphere.

Pre-Teen Circuit Challenge

Rochester Area Family Y Youth Fitness Program

Are you between the ages of 10-12 and are looking at getting started in thefitness center? This fun & challenging program will have you working with the fitness center staff through a series of workouts that target both strength and cardio training. A pre and post test is included with the program, so that your physical fitness levels can be tracked.You will meet twice per week with a group of other pre-teens.

“Small Stuff” Basketball
Boys and Girls, ages 3-1/2 to 5 with a parent.

This special program is a unique way to spend time with your child while learning the fundamentals of basketball. Led by YMCA staff, you and your child will work together through skill stations (dribbling, passing, shooting). The season ends with the kids playing in the big game! Players will receive a team t-shirt. Program meets in the South Gym.

K-3rd Basketball League
Boys and girls will learn the fundamentals of basketball which include shooting, passing, dribbling, offense and defense. Also, they will develop teamwork, self-esteem, and confidence while having lots of fun. We will practice, scrimmage and play games during the eight week session. Everyone will receive an equal amount of playing time.

Games are scheduled Saturdays, between the hours of 8:15am - 4:00pm. The schedule is determined by the number of teams in each division. Team shirts will be distributed prior to the first game.

Floor Hockey
Boys & Girls, Grades 6-8

This program provides players with a fun experience while keeping competition in perspective. With strict adherence to the rules of floor hockey, the main emphasis is on good sportsmanship, teamwork, fair play and fun! Each week will consist of a 20 minute group warm-up followed by 30 minutes of game play. Participants should wear workout clothes and shoes and bring a Mouthguard. The Y will provide all floor hockey equipment: hockey sticks, hockey pucks, goals, and t-shirts.

Dodgeball League
Boys & Girls, Grades 6th-9th


Get ready to Dodge! Join us for the first ever Dodgeball League here at the Y. This exciting old school sport is back and we are taking it to the next level. Teams will be picked at random and various games will be played. This is a great game for developing hand - eye coordination, sportsmanship, and team play. Official Rochester Area Family Y dodgeball League T-shirts will be provided to all participants.

**The Y pays an annual membership fee to the International Ryukyu Kempo Association for each Intermediate and Advanced student.

We will look forward to seeing you Tuesdays in the fitness center and Thursdays in the Multi-Purpose Room on second floor. Some of the equipment you will be using includes: Resista- Ball, Bosu, Urban Rebounders, Selected Cybex Strength Machines, Jump Ropes and more . . .

fair play, Y Values, and just plain having fun. The program consists of 2

weeks of practice and 6 game schedule. Games are held behind the Y.
